THE SHOW

Biloxi Little Theatre proudly presents One Thousand Words, an original musical that follows the sweeping romantic journey of Warren and Daniel from the depths of an Appalachian coal mine to the bustling streets of 1940s New York City and, eventually, the front lines of a world at war. Defying a society that is not yet ready to accept their love, the two men face difficult choices that test the limits of their bond. This sincere, heartfelt musical explores the universal experiences of love, loss, and hope.

ROLES TO BE FILLED

NOTE: We are seeking a diverse and inclusive cast, welcoming all races, genders, and body types. Age descriptions are suggestive of how old the characters look, not how old the actors must be.

ADULT ROLES

WARREN JOHNSON (Tenor; age range 18-33; male) is all-American: handsome, kind, and charismatic; his loyalty is unshakable, and he leads with his heart. To his surprise, he falls in love with DANIEL. He dreams of becoming a pilot, ultimately inspiring him to enlist in the Army during WWII.

DANIEL SANDERSON (Tenor; age range 18-33; male) is WARREN’S friend and lover. A dreamer and aspiring actor, he puts forth a confident front, but inside, he is fragile. He stays home during the war and faces difficult, heartbreaking choices.

RICHARD HANKS (Tenor; age range 18-40; male) is a self-absorbed journalist seeking fame in the 1990s. His interview with OLDER WARREN serves as the framing device for the show, and WARREN’S story shapes his character arc.

OLDER WARREN (Non-singing role; age range 70s; male) is the older self of WARREN JOHNSON. In the face of a terminal illness, he invites RICHARD into his memories of the past, telling his final story.

VIRGINIA CLARICE (Alto; age range 18-33; female) is an aspiring singer, gregarious and larger-than-life. She is in a publicly taboo, interracial relationship with a Black soldier, THOMAS.

THOMAS JONES (Baritone; age range 18-33; Black male) is optimistic and blunt; he is an enlisted soldier fighting discrimination on and off the battlefield to win VIRGINIA’S affection.

ELIZABETH MORRIS (Soprano; age range 18-33; female) is a childhood friend of WARREN and DANIEL. Emotionally vulnerable and hopeless romantic, she is searching for love, family, and shelter.

LUKE SANDERSON (Non-singing role; age range 18-33; male) is DANIEL’s older brother and WARREN’s good friend. Entitled and insecure, he is a catalyst for conflict between himself, WARREN, DANIEL, and ELIZABETH.

GEORGE (Baritone; age range 18-40; male) is a soldier, coarse and ruthless.

FRANKIE (Tenor; age range 18-25; male) is a soldier, younger and immature.

JACOB (Baritone; age range 18-40; male) is a soldier, mature and level-headed.

KRISTY (Alto; age range 18-50; female) is RICHARD’s unapologetically stern boss.

THE WAITRESS (Non-singing role; age range 18-70; female) is a no-nonsense NYC waitress at Java King, where “the pancakes are hot, and the coffee reigns supreme.”

ENSEMBLE (all ages and genders) is a multi-racial cast of characters playing miners, citizens of New York City, nightclub patrons, soldiers at war, etc.

YOUNGER ROLES

Please note this show contains mature content: adult language, depictions of war violence, and tobacco/alcohol usage. However, the younger actors will not be involved in those scenes.

YOUNG DANIEL (Tenor; age range 10-16; male) is the younger self of DANIEL SANDERSON—age 13.

VIRGINIA’S SON (N/A; age range 5-10; male)
